The Engine Works Glasgow from ruin to wedding mecca!

Since being one of the first photographers to ever shoot there in 2019, I marvelled at how far the Engine Works has come on in the years since. It was pretty darn ace back in the day, let me tell you, and now Michael and Adele have weaved even more of their magic and confirmed the Engine Works as one of Glasgow’s coolest venues.

History of The Engine Works Glasgow

Dating back to 1837, The Engine Works played an important role in Glasgow’s industrial heritage.

Built on the banks of the Forth and Clyde canal, the Works was perfectly placed to transport goods. It’s hard to believe now, but steam engines used to be manufactured within these walls and shipped to countries all over the world.

A decade ago Michael and Adele saw past the tumbledown stone walls and dilapidated interior. They’ve transformed the space into a super cool, industrial blank canvas, somehow keeping all those amazing architectural features whilst making the building feel contemporary and stylish.

“The only limit to its use is your imagination”

I’m a big fan of the attitude that got them through those years of restoration and renovation. And it’s a mantra that couples have now taken to heart, really putting their own stamp onto the place when it comes to wedding decor. Not that it actually needs much as the space itself is so industrial and fab.

Wedding preparations at One Devonshire Gardens

Ashleigh and James both got ready at One Devonshire Gardens. If you’re getting married in Glasgow then take a look at this beautiful boutique hotel. Part of the Hotel du Vin chain, One Devonshire Gardens is super luxurious and the light…oh the light! Feast your eyes on that stained glass window, I was in my element as I was taking pictures of Ashleigh’s bouquet right in front of it.

Slight aside, I bang on about my love of photographing people. I’m all about the joy after all (clue is in the name!). But I’ll always take time out of the hustle and bustle of the day to photograph your details. Your flowers, a pocket watch that belonged to your grandad, the ‘something blue’ that your best friend gifted to you, anything that is part of your day. You’ve put thought into planning your wedding, down to the smallest detail. I’m there to capture that for you.

Weddings at the Engine Works Glasgow

It’s less than ten minutes from One Devonshire Gardens to the Engine Works and Ashleigh made the journey in a white Hackney Cab, which was very cool.

The Engine Works looked fab, no surprise there. The space was strung with lights, adding a twinkling cosiness to the ceremony. Flowers and candles lined the aisle while more flowers spilled out of crate arrangements adding pops of colour against the red brick walls.

It was one of those crisp October days and we managed to get outside for confetti. What a win! After a bit of mingling in the courtyard it was back inside for fizz, canapes and more hugs. Always the best part of the day.

The Engine Works is an all weather venue. Which is handy when you’re getting married in Scotland. We were able to make the most of the courtyard, a real suntrap, for James and Ashleigh’s portraits and then headed indoors to that amazing industrial, iron staircase. If the weather isn’t playing ball and you’re indoors all day then worry not, there are SO many places for amazing pictures. I could’ve spent ages just wandering the venue with Ashleigh and James.

It was so good to be back at the Engine Works, I can’t quite believe that Michael and Adele have managed to make an amazing venue ever better but they have. I cannot wait to visit again.
