Michelle & Scott's Loch Venachar Wedding was Raining with Colour
“Thank you so much for keeping us laughing all day! Everyone commented on how relaxed you made them feel! So glad we picked you to be the photographer, I knew we would get on fine and I needed not to feel like that weirdo bride for the day so sincerely thank you. So glad we put our faith in you!”

Loch Venachar wedding
What’s this, a Scottish wedding where we all got absolutely soaked through?! I know, I know, I do spend a lot of time chatting away about the weather on a wedding day but when you get married in Scotland the weather is pretty much an extra guest. One of those guests who you love dearly but do have to keep a wee eye on in case they go a bit wild once they’ve got a whisky or two inside them… Basically, unpredictable. Just like the weather.
So, here we are in July. And it poured down. But it was part of the day and, oh boy, did we embrace what the Scottish weather gods threw at us!
Loch Venachar Lodges wedding
I’m a big fan of Loch Venachar Lodges. Tucked away in the very heart of the beautiful Trossachs, these lodges are amazing. My friends and family are probably a bit sick of me banging on about them.
Picture this, two lodges – ultra cool, very modern and yet still managing to blend perfectly into the countryside around them – right on the shores of Loch Venachar. Michelle and Scott had taken over both lodges, one each, to get ready in. These two are ace. They’ve been together forever and have a two kids, including their wee boy who is sooo cute. He was over the moon to be twinning with his Dad in their kilts. And their daughter who was being real sassy in her shades getting ready with her Mum!
I love it when couples get ready near (or even with!) each other. It means I can share in both sets of morning preparations and couples get to see what they’ve each been up to. While Scott and his pals were busy with kilts, sgian dubhs (ornamental knives!) and whisky, Michelle was posing in her fancy shades and sharing an emotional moment with her super smiley Dad.
Wedding ceremony overlooking Loch Venachar
Michelle and Scott had the best of both worlds for their day – Loch Venachar Lodges and Venachar Lochside, the wedding venue that’s right next door!
Loch Venachar is one of twenty two (yes really!) bodies of water in the Trossachs and the setting is ultra romantic, uber dramatic and, quite frankly, a bit of a photographer’s paradise. The plan had been for Michelle and Scott to get married outside, overlooking the loch but as the morning went on we could see the dark clouds gathering on the horizon. Right up to the last minute we were optimistically holding out for the lochside ceremony… but the rain had other plans. It began to absolutely tip it down so there was nothing for it but to get ourselves indoors. Luckily Venachar Lochside has a partially covered decking area, so they still got the outdoor ceremony of their dreams, but with a bit of shelter for them and their guests! The views were awesome too, looking out over the loch with Ben Ledi looming in the background.
Colourful, relaxed micro wedding at Loch Venachar
After the ceremony the rain had stopped, hurrah! So we all headed down to the lochside for confetti. Now, I like Michelle and Scott a lot. They’re a whole load of fun to hang out with and they listened to my wedding day advice – namely, get an absolute ton of confetti. Imagine my JOY when we got down to the shore and they disappeared into an actual cloud of colourful confetti. What a moment! There was so much of the stuff that Michelle even ended up with a mouthful of it. I mean, hey, it’s biodegradable so whatever floats your boat!
While the rest of their guests – and this was a wee wedding so there were only about 15 of them – hung out at Venachar Lochside, Michelle, Scott and I went back to the Lodges for some photos. We got onto the jetty, they snuggled up and…it started pissing down. Absolutely chucking it down. There was only one thing for it, we all burst into fits of giggles. See Scotland, whatever weather you throw at a Joy Story couple they will just laugh in the face of it!
We got some ace photos and then I whisked them back to their family in time for food. A short, but oh so sweet day. Micro weddings are ace. If you’re having one just give me a shout.
