Danielle & Leeroy's Murthly Castle Wedding
“Thank you so so much for everything!! You are so so amazing!! Such amazing photographs. We are in love!!! Thank you so very much!”

Murthly Castle wedding
Murthly Castle was a (very welcome and exciting) surprise. I’d not heard of the venue before Danielle and Leeroy got in touch and I’m so pleased they chose me to be their photographer. This is a real hidden gem!
I was chatting away to the owner on the day and I got the impression they only do a limited number of weddings. So it’s really an ‘if you know you know’ venue. And as you’ve landed on this blogpost well…now you know. You’re welcome!
Wedding photography at Murthly Castle
Murthly Castle is gorgeous. Nestled at the foot of the Perthshire Highlands (not too far from Dunkeld) you can imagine how incredibly picturesque the countryside around it is. The estate is stunning, with woodlands, rivers and endless greenery. The castle itself, and the Chapel of St Anthony The Eremite, are central to the estate and surrounded by their own grounds and a lovely walled garden. It’s super tranquil and completely private so ideal for weddings.
Like most Scottish castles there is an extensive and interesting history. The oldest part of Murthly Castle dates back to the 1400s. It was originally built as a royal hunting lodge for David I. There are rumours that Bonnie Prince Charlie retreated to one of the towers after the Jacobite Rebellion. Sir William Drummond Stewart, famous for his adventures in the American West, lived at the castle in the mid 1800s and introduced American Bison to the estate. In 1890 the estate passed to Sir William’s distant cousin – the wonderfully named Colonel Walter Fothringham of Pourie. Colonel Walter’s great grandson Thomas is the current owner of the castle and estate.
Woodland wedding in Perthshire
Danielle and Leeroy were married in the Douglas Fir woods, an incredible setting. It was the perfect wee wedding in the most epic location. They’re both English but wanted to get married somewhere utterly stunning so…hello Scotland! They chose the right place for sure.
Their ceremony was fab, they’re both really silly together and wanted a personal and fun ceremony. They definitely got that! They jumped the broom at one point, which has ties to both Scottish and Black tradition. Historically in the Highlands the broom would be used to sweep any dirt in front of the couple who would then jump over it – getting rid of any bad omens. In Black culture jumping the broom dates back to the 1800s when enslaved African Americans were not legally allowed to marry. Jumping the broom was a symbolic way to get married. Today many Black people jump the broom in their ceremonies to recognise their history and legacy.
Leeroy and Danielle really got the giggles when they jumped the broom together, it couldn’t have been easy for Danielle with her gorgeous floor length dress, but she managed it!
I was with them for about three hours, from the morning to just before dinner. I had so much fun with everyone – their family and friends are really good craic. The grounds at Murthly Castle are amazing, I literally cannot take a bad photo there. Of course it helps that Leeroy and Danielle are very easy to photograph together too!
So, now you’re in on the secret to this amazing venue, why not think about getting married there? And then book me to photograph your day!
